How to wash your car without putting swirls in the paint

Here is a fact that surprises most people: the majority of swirl marks and fine scratches in car paint come from washing, not from driving. The good news is that a few simple habits keep your paint clean and swirl-free between details.

Why washing causes swirls

Every time you drag a dirty mitt or sponge across the paint, any grit it is holding acts like sandpaper. Automatic car washes with spinning brushes are the worst offenders. Those thousands of tiny scratches are what catch the light as swirl marks.

The safe wash method

• Rinse first. Rinse the loose dirt off before anything touches the paint.
• Use two buckets. One with wash soap, one with clean water to rinse the mitt between panels so grit does not go back on the car.
• Work top to bottom. The lower panels are the dirtiest, so leave them for last.
• Use a proper wash mitt and a pH-neutral soap, not dish washing liquid, which strips protection.
• Dry with a clean microfibre or a blower, not an old towel from the garage.

Skip the automatic wash

If you take one thing from this, skip the drive-through brush washes. A touchless wash is fine in a pinch, but nothing beats a careful hand wash for keeping paint clean.

Make it even easier
